well when I rebuilt my carb I thought I would simply get a new base gasket. This thing from AZ I did'nt like the looks of right away. Hard, black material.
Well I had to take carb off again associated with another problem I was having. Today after everything back together I noticed it was leaking pretty bad around base of carb.
Went to find the old style Victor gasket but could not get it. All they offer now is this Felpro . DO these gaskets need a more substantial tightening or is there supossed to be a thin gasket on each side of it?
AND of course, I think I threw my old Victor away.
Any help appreciated.
Man it just keeps getting worse.
Check with a real parts store like NAPA. I quit wasting my time with AZ or Advance unless I need oil and filters. You can only tighten so much before you break something.
Well I did check the other stores too. Even CQ that has Victor can't find it.
WTF, what do other people do? All I need is a 2bbl carb base gasket like the one that came off it. Not this hard black piece of crap.
Sorry guys...getting close to quitting on it.
The carburetor base gasket should look just like the one you got at Autozone, even though I avoid that place myself as well (except for fluids, etc). The base gasket is about a quarter inch thick; it acts as a heat sink. The holes where the studs go through the gaskets should have captive grommets.
Does this motor have EGR? If so, the thick gasket goes under the carburetor just as with a non-EGR setup. A high-temperature steel-woven gasket goes in between the spacer plate and the manifold.
Carburetors must be torqued down gently and evenly. It's a lot easier than you think to snap off a corner of the base.
I get all of my parts online through Rock Auto; it's a waste of my time to drive around to five different stores to get all the parts to do one job, or spending all Saturday morning on the phone talking to someone who hasn't been under a hood. It's worth the shipping costs to me.
Carburetor base gaskets should be a dime a dozen. Fel-Pro makes good stuff.
