fuel gauge reading problems

fuel gauge reading problems
hi all , my fuel gauge never went to full always went to 3/4.. last fill up only went to half....? where is the problem ,is it the sending unit , the float in the tank, or is it in the gauge itself in the dash? thanks for any help

First, unplug the sending unit and ground the wire that comes from the gauge. Turn the ignition on and watch the gauge. If it swings all the way to "full" everything from the wire back to the gauge is good.
My guess is the float has become fuel logged and is partially sunk. The floats are brass and soldered together, these crack and soak up fuel.
The floats are still available. Dennis Carpenter has an "improved" version that doesn't crack and sink.
