I was just wondering how hard it would be to convert a '78 F250 over to 4 wheel drive. Obviously a front drive axle, transfer case, and driveshafts would be needed, but how complicated would the conversion be otherwise?
Much easier to start with a 4WD frame. It can be and has been done many, many times but unless you have very good fab and welding skills stay away.
The 4WD frames are different from the firewall forward. The steering system is different also.
It's deffinitely NOT a bolt in project.
But that's not stopping me. I just picked up front and rear Dana 60's out of a 1997 Dodge 2500 4x4 at the junkyard today. It's the first parts I've picked up (out of many to come) to start converting my 78 F-350 from 2wd to 4wd.
Of course, as you stated....nothing is a bolt in (like the 80-96 frames), but where's the fun if there's no challenge? It's gonna be a ton of work, but I am looking forward to it! Besides, it gives me a reason to clean up and fix some other issues while I'm at it. So, it's ALL good!
