The tilt column in my truck needs a rebuild(79). Anyone rebuilt one before? What parts are needed? Does someone have the part #'s needed to rebuild it? The wheel has a little side to side slop, probable a bearing or a bushing. I've never worked on a column before.
Mike it is very easy to rebuild the column .
Remove the steering wheel and basically you are half way there .
Most part stores have the necessary bearings , I dont have any part numbers though .
You may want to replace the cam for the signal light switch while you are in there too .
I have not messed with a tilt column but I would think that they are pretty much the same as the regular column .
If I remember correctly you can remove the outer portion of the column with it still connected to the rag joint .
I think you can unbolt the column from the dash and then remove the steering wheel + the signal light switch and the entire outer "cover" will just slide off leaving the solid shaft in the truck .
Then you could replace the bearings.
i am rebuilding 3 tilt columns but i am converting them to have the ign key in the column. you can get parts from a van or a lincoin. the tilt part is all the same. i just swap the top part of the column that tilts with the key to the other column. but if you want the wheel to lock you must use the wheel from the locking column. because it has holes drilled in it for the pin to lock the wheel. when im done im gonna put one in my truck. that way if anyone tries to steal my truck they'll see 2 ign switch's and wont know what the hell is going on and hopefully move on to another vehical.
