What year Truck? Had same problem on my '05 smelled gas at idle, did some research and found the 5.4 motors have a fuel injector problem, even on early '06 models that used left over parts. Ford extended it's warranty for 11 years or 120k miles to replace defected injectors that stick open (up to 2 total). My engine warning light blinked a few times on the highway but stopped. This could bend a rod if the gas fills up in a chamber called hydrolock. I replaced all 8 injectors.
