So they ask me to check the a/c out,yep not a problem,Boy was I wrong some jackass Along the way thought it would be a good idea to take the pump off!!!!! God only knows why, probly for mileage.Anyway to make this short everything was ruined lines, condenser, evap,EVERYTHING JUNK !!!! So guys if your not going to use it take it all off and PLUG EVERYTHING!!! So some poor smuck like me trying to be a nice guy dont have to pull his limited hair out trying to find all these parts! and the good thing is you'll sell it make some money and someone else will have there parts and be happy. The good news I should have it going this weekend YIPPPIEEE Oh and another thing if your going to add gauges DONT SCREW THEM TO THE DASH PAD ITS F***ING STUPID Thats what the same JACKASS did to this truck
I see a lot of trucks on ebay that HAD factory A/C, and sometimes they have the parts. Living in the desert southwest, I just keep looking.
Are you sure they all had "factory" A/C?
1973/79 F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco. There were 3different types of A/C systems available for these vehicles, the parts do not interchange.
1) Factory installed integral A/C is combined with the heater. The A/C controls are located within the same panel as the heater controls.
2) Deluxe dealer installed A/C is combined with the heater. The 2 A/C switches are located in the HUGE dash bezel that sweeps across the entire right side of the dash, covering up the glove box.
There is a hang-on glove box bolted to the bottom of the dash.
3) Economy dealer installed A/C is not combined with the heater. The 2 A/C switches are located in a panel that also contains two A/C registers. This panel is located in the dash to the left of the extant glove box.
The systems I've seen, that I refer to as "factory A/C" are designed with a big compressor mounted to the driver-side head, big hoses that route to the "air box" and A/C controls in the climate control console. Probably as described in #1.
I've also seen "dealer A/C", which usually has the same compressor, mounted in the same place, with hoses which go through the firewall, someplace between the carb and the heater core. These do not have an "air box" and have their ***** combined with the registers. #3
I don't believe that I've seen #2.
Anyway, if there is any possibility that the truck will ever be sold (even if it requires somebody dying) please keep us desert-dwellers in mind and keep the A/C intact!
My first pickup had Option #2. I've never seen another one like that. It was a '73 F-100 Ranger. I stupidly traded it for a brand new '82 when I was a senior in high school. The '82 was a POS. That's the only non-dent I've ever owned.
+1 on keeping A/C intact, especially if it's factory. Those old York compressors will last nearly forever.

They may look the same, but looks can be deceiving.
The compressors used with factory A/C were not the same as the dealer A/C compressor.

One thing that I have wondered about, I have seen York comp. mounted both vertically and horizontally on these trucks. I can see why they needed to for different engines; height considerations and all but I have seen them mounted both ways on 360s and 390s. Any idea why?
My truck came with factory air but someone decided to remove the all the brackets for the a/c compressor and belt adjuster. Now I'm trying to find them?

If you're going to use the original York compressor you'll need two brackets and two idler pulleys.
The main bracket bolts to the front of the engine and stradles the water pump. This bracket also holds the adjustable idler. The second bracket bolts to the drivers side head and supports the compressor. Mounted below this bracket is a fixed idler. This one is used to stop belt vibration.
If you're doing a Sanden style conversion (like shown here) there'll be an adapter bracket that bolts to the stock Ford compressor mount.
The adjustable idler is still available from the parts store. The brackets probably best bet is the junk yard. There are still some NOS fixed idlers available.
So how can you find out if it was factory or dealer when there all gone for the brackets. I'm looking at putting a sanden setup on the truck but don't know what other brackets to find. The truck still has the hoses coming out of the evaportor on the firewall
