random engine noise

random engine noise

New to site here so bear with me. Is it normal for a 2011 6.7 to have more of a louder diesel rattle at slight throttle then smooth way out after about 15mph. It seems to do this randomly.
thanks. Have not had the new flash yet.... for the tranny troubles.

My 2012 does that and it seems to be with each tranny upshift. I think it torques up a bit at the shift just to let you know it's got some *****.

Mine does that - it seems to have more of a diesel rattle with a light throttle - it's not when it torques up - it occurs for me when running through gears at lower rpn and throttle. I've always assumed it's normal.

Mine spent it's first 20,000 miles as a very quiet diesel. 6.7 's run a lot like gas engines. Being quiet is a major Ford selling point and one of the reasons I moved from my '06 6.0 to this truck. Went in for the NOX sensor replacement after the CEL came on. Now it is very noisy, night and day difference. Comes and goes randomly. I've noticed that when first started cold and driven it runs more like it used to. However, once the oil temp gets up around 160 and above it jumps into the noisy and poor running mode. I use the oil temp rather than coolant temp because that's what we have in the gauge mode. I'd be interested in others experiences with oil temp versus noise. Give it a try and post back up. Thanks.

Mine will make louder clatters at many different temp levels at random.
Sometimes it will be loud as I accelerate then quiet down.
Sometimes it's quiet as I accelerate then suddenly wants to sound like a 6.4L with 10 PSI boost.
Then there is the 6.0L clatter but when I hear that, there's a good chance I just hit a regen.
I look at my Edge CTS and sure enough, the red light is on and the dash will display cleaning exhaust within 15 or so seconds.

The louder clatter is nice to hear but it shocks us because we expect this engine to be so quiet most of the time.

In the end, I don't worry about it anymore but I also don't have any performance issues with engine noise levels.
Since you mention a performance loss once it's warmed up, then I would say something isn't correct.
You know your truck better than anyone and if something is different after 20,000 good miles, then I would be investigating, too.

Edit: the other day my truck computer decided not to boot the turbo and the engine had a louder tone.
Can you make boost when this happens?
I doubt this is the issue because the truck doesn't have much power at all in the upper gears without the turbo.

Actually, now that you mentioned regen I can tell you that once warm it runs a lot like it is in regen mode only it is not. The tech at the dealership said many customers are reporting poor driveabity after implementing the TSB 11-11-13 procedure for NOX sensor replacement and recalibration.

Which is why I'm afraid to fix something that isn't broken (in my case).

I think the lesson here is, don't do TSB procedures unless you are having an issue. Don't do any re-calibration or PCM flashes unless they are needed.

The fuel injection timing varies,as needed which changes fuel delivery At different degrees is why the noise changes so much. So
Sometimes mine sounds like a 7.3 for just a tad

Kyper05 Your correct I have notice the same with my CTS when in regen.

Random noise can work for me

I'm OK with random noise during acceleration. I expect it. But when I'm sitting at the bank teller window on a 100+ day and not have to shut off the engine to hear, great. It's a given that Dodge Cummins drivers have to shut down or risk being rude.

My old 5.4 ran better when it was cold. The current 6.7 runs much better when it is hot. The noise seems to be random.

I agree that we should not take medicine that is not required, even if available.

The first 2011 SD I test drove was there, they had a gorgeous dark red KR that the owner had used as his personal vehicle. We hit the freeway headed north and I'm cruising along, when my boyfriend leans over from the passenger seat and says, "You do realize you're going 90, don't you..." I think that salesman was probably glad when that test drive was over!

I would have bought that truck but it didn't have the nav system.

And to stay on topic, I don't really notice random noises on mine - but I usually have the stereo cranked and am singing along with the radio!
