Got 97 f-250 temp gauge seems to not be working right. after warms up gauge goes mid way of normal. If on the freeway or towing it goes all most to the end of the normal. i changed the sending unit with a aftermarket one and have had same results. any advice? thanks
its on the hot side of normal. i put a after market temp guage on to make sure it wasnt running hot which it isnt. just wondering what would be best way to fix it or if there could be another problem?
It has to be either the sending unit, the wiring, or the gauge itself. How is that for narrowing it down !? LOL.
The way that system works, the sending unit is just a thermistor that reduces it's resistance progressively over a given temperature range. To test the gauge, you can ground the signal wire directly to a ground and when you turn on the key, the needle should peg to the hot side. If that works, I would look closely at the wiring and make sure there aren't any places that are skinned and could be contacting the engine block or chassis.
Am I correct in my understanding that you have changed the sending unit and it still behaves the same? When you connected the aftermarket gauge did you use a different sending unit or the stock one?
