temp sending unit issue ? or tstat

A few months ago I noticed my temp gauge was erratic in that it would climb up to the R in normal then go below the N -

then lately it would not even touch the N. I replaced the old Tstat with a NAPA T Stat. I did not specify a temp range 195-197 however - was that dumb of me ? ) and it seems as though it stays lower on the gauge than before !! I recently had the coolant flushed and filled also so it is new and I would hope there would be no blockage anywhere ...

so now I want to chage the temp sending unit.

any thoughts or suggestions ?

thanks,

Doug

Without knowing what Tstat you put in, it's hard to tell. Could you have possibly put a 180 in? If so, that would account for why it's running so cold.

Since the gauge is barely moving, it might be a gauge problem. Try this very simple little test. Remove the single wire connector from the sending unit, shove a nail in it, ground it to the engine block & turn the key to run. If the gauge shows full hot the sending unit is probably bad.

BTW, ever since the Ford T-stat in my 87 Ranger stuck shut on me at 5K miles Ive been using a 180 degree Toyota T-stat & the gauge runs right in the middle & no more problems with a stuck T-stat.

Hey guys thanks for your input. So I went to the NAPA fella and he said it was a 192-195 degree range TStat. I got a sending unit too and I will try the ground test too. I checked the hoses and the radiator and both are hot I am getting heat and the guage moves only to the N and then will drop down as I a watching it. Wierd.

thanks again,

Doug
