I have a 1990 f-250 4x4 ,351w. New motor and nearly everything else new ,injectors, filters, plugs ,wires . Nearly everything really. Sometimes when I start it it acts flooded but will soon level out. Not everytime but more than it should. I pulled the vaccum line off the fuel regulater and it smelled a little like gas but not much like fresh fuel does
I only say IAC because i had same aggrevation on another vehicle. It too was new but was weak IAC motor and it would start rough but soon level out. After a friend told me to check it i took it back and got a new one, van runs good now. After that i too would say fuel but it seems you covered that unless its picking up air some where.
I will get a new IAC and see if it helps. I don't think picking up air is a problem cause it don't act up every time. Idk. Will keep you posted on findings.
I had a similar problem with our 460, about once a quarter it would start missing , running rough, at idle and running black smoke. I installed an electric fuel pressure gauge it took months for the symptons to appear again but I caught it in the act. Fuel pressure regulator appears to be sticking, the pressure was at 80 PSI on the rail according to the gauge. I shut it down, waited a few minutes started it back up and it was back to 40 PSI as normal. If you are running a 2600 down the road you probably wouldn't notice the roughness as I never noticed an issue at speed.
A casual check of the pressure was always ok. After it happened once I shut it down and installed a gauge at a restart it was fine.
Use an electric gauge you do not want fuel in the cab!
I have the same issues with Daisy. And I've replaced the TPS and IAC. When cold, she revs to about 2200 RPM or so, for about 35-45 seconds, until she's ready to go, then she settles into an idle. Sometimes a surging idle, depending on her mood.. And yea, most the time when I start her, she acts like she doesn't wanna start and then acts flooded...but the vacuum hose on my FPR doesn't smell of fuel at all. I dunno. I've chalked it up to the stock SD computer not working properly. I'll eventually convert to MAF, just haven't yet.
The one thing I did do today was change to using my rear tank. After I switched to my rear it started fine and after it got to operating temp I shut it off and let it set for a bit like usual. And it still started fine. Idk. I wonder if it could be the difference in the fuel pumps. I'm gonna try it for a few days and see how it acts. I will let yall know.
