Buying a 2005 Excursion, maybe? Need advice
#17
Thanks everyone for your input...and knowledge. I am glad you are here to help us out and take the time to provide your experiences with these vehicles. I am thankful I did not sign the papers and unknowingly buy a 3-4K fix. The excursion is most definietly the right vehicle for our size family and gives us room to grow. Now, its time to find the right one at the right fix it price.
Thanks again for everyone who replied and even those that help others when they really don't have too. Ya'll scratched my back...I'm sure some good Karma is headed your way!
Aaron-(Thanks to this forum..holding out for the perfect excursion...meanwhile my 08 Ram 1500 Hemi is gonna have to do the job...with a new scangauge to keep an eye on its TFT.)

There are good ones out there. This particular one has typical EGR related problems that could be fixed for about $4K. If you could get the truck for under $12K, it would be worth the time and money to make it bullet proof. I doubt seriously if the dealer would like to reduce the price that much.
Actually, the 6.0L that will be on towing duty, will sooner or later need this sort of "fix". The advantage of the 6.0L is that it is mounted in a newer chassis, usually has lower miles, AND most important--comes with a great transmission for towing.
Find a rust-free southern Excursion 6.0L with less than 80K miles. Buy from an individual now that you know how to test EOT vs. FWT. Budget for the extra $4K to put in head studs and an EGR delete. It is expensive because they have to lift the body off the frame. When you are done, you will have a great family hauler that can tow heavy.

It does sound like the oil cooler is clogged, eventually this causes
the EGR cooler (NOT the EGR valve which was replaced before) to
overheat and fail.
I'm not sure an extended warranty (3rd party) would cover it (mine doesn't). I would instead opt for the full bullet-proof option from
BPD - no point having to re-replace it again in the future IMO.
Mine got to about 20* delta on the highway and I budgeted to
replace it with the BPD system. Luckily a local ex-Ford PSD mechanic
(self employed now) was a BPD local installer and did all the work
for me - since it's more involved than I wanted to tackle.
