13-45 Low Range Shift Problem

I've got a problem with my T-case not shifting into low range... 2hi, 4hi and neutral work, but when you try to go into 4 lo it doesn't actually engage. The shifter moves some but doesn't feel like it's moving far enough to engage. When you let the clutch out is grinds as if it's trying to shift but not getting all the way. It used to shift cleanly but seem to have suddenly stopped.

My best guess is that something in the internal shift linkage in the case is off, possibly a bad bushing. Anyone else had a similar problem? What was it? Where can I get the parts?

I can't take the truck down for any length of time, so I want to get the parts I need, pull the case, break it down and get it fixed asap. I don't want to do anything more than required since it's getting replaced with a 13-56 soon. Unfortunately, it's going to be at least 2 months before I can get the new case, so i got to get this one working.

Thanks.

Just a thought but you might want to check the stupid stuff first like carpet, boot or other things blocking or jamming the shift linkage. Probably inside the case but never hurt to check the easy thing first.

Usually isn't but worth a try. That's about all I could help you with on that style t'case. Now an old Jeep Dana 18 or 20 I could maybe be a little more help.

Get under the truck, and shoot some PB blaster on the transfer case linkage. Mine was bone dry and was kind of aggravating to shift (Mine was a NP208 though, and the pattern is from front to back 2h-4h-n-4l, just pull straight back or push straight forward).

The PB smoothed up the lever quite a bit.

Mine usually won't go into 4-Lo easy until I put the truck in neutral, let off the clutch, and step on the brake pad. Remember, you've got to be at a DEAD STOP to go into 4-Lo. Sometimes it take a little bit of force to get it to go, as the 4-Lo is a spur cut gear, I think (un-syncronized).

Can you shift from 2H to 4H and from 4H to Neutral really easy?

I'd also check to make sure you've got enough fluid in your transfer case.

Are you on a hill or a flat surface when it does this?

On a side note, sometimes after I've gone into 4-Lo and am going back to 2 wheel drive, it'll go to neutral and 4H, but you've got to play with the clutch and the transmission shifter to get it to let you go into 2H. For instance, if I'm in 4 Lo and granny gear, I'll shift to 4H and put it in 2nd (normal driving gear), then it'll usually go into 2nd for me easy.

If it doesn't go into 4 Lo or back to 2 wheel drive, just fiddle with the clutch, brake, and shifter a bit.

I remember on my old 78, to get her to go into 4 low I would have to play with the clutch a bit to get it to synchonize....sometimes if I put it is reverse and just let the clutch out a little it would help line it up.

But since you're saying this has happened all of a sudden...that's something different then.

Linkage is free, checked that already.

Was trying to shift on a flat surface, but I tried rocking the truck, tried slipping the clutch, no luck.

What it feel like to me is that the hi/lo shift collar is not moving, or not moving far enough. I'm thinking either one of the bushings is shot or the pads on the shift fork are bad.

Any thoughts on a good parts source for these?

Thanks.
