lol thanks william!

Ive got a set of injectors from a 96 that had 125k on em.. didnt win the free injector overhaul so it might have to wait till august, but I wanna be prepped when its time.

Are there any good injector R&R writeups?

The only suggestion I have would be is to use inch pound torque wrench for more accuracy ( just multiply ft pounds by 12 to get inch pounds.

Thanks a ton man - that is a great writeup. And the pictures are perfect.

Quick question - if installing the injectors does not put much oil into the cylinders itself (correct me if I'm wrong here) could you purge oil with both the injectors out and glow plugs out to minimize the amount of oil going into the cylinder head?

If installing the injectors gets a lot of oil into the cylinder itself, then ignore this question

Looking to get this done this weekend assuming my new GPs arrive in time. Will tell ya how it goes.

I'm not sure... not sure how the IPR sits when the truck is off. I'd assume there's a chance that you'd pump oil into the bores of you didn't have the injectors in there. Maybe someone else will know and post?

I think I'll probably do a full writeup when I have the time to sit down... on the OBS trucks, it's pretty easy because you don't have as much to remove on the top end as you do on the Super Duties. I think you pull the intake and tubes off and shove a few wires around, but that's it. 13mm bolts for the valve covers and you're in. Tie-down bolts are 8mm and glow plugs are 10mm. Have to use a 1/4-drive deep socket for that. There's a trick... if you screw the glow plug all the way out, it'll get stuck inside the socket and bind when you try to pull it out. What you have to do is leave the plug screwed in 1 or 2 turns so you can get your socket out, then finger the glow plug out.

Oh... haha, and watch out that you put the glow plug in it's hole. I've missed it and dropped it in the push rod slots before. I was lucky, but that would NOT have been funny! Oh, and I'm gonna edit my post, but it's important to properly torque everything before you put it together.
One tip about this install a piece of ruber o clear hose in the GP and then turn it to get the GP out, its easier and have more control, than with just your fingers.

Man, I have tried that and I could never get it to work. It would work one time and then there'd be oil in the end and the hose would spin. Guess I need to try it again...?

If you leave the injectors out, you'll just pump oil into the cylinders via the injector cups.

I usually stuff a hunk of paper towel on the end of the GP and smash it on there, then smash the other end into the drill and drill them in.

3 times outa 10 it works.


I've even tried melting hoses and tubes to fit tight on the GP's.

If these are ignition-related, can you skip the step of pulling the relay and fuses if you turn over the engine block by jumping the starter relay, as opposed to using the ignition key?

Seems like you should, but then again I'm not sure what those relays do.

The relays don't power anything if you don't turn the key on (at least, not that I know of)... when you jump the starter relay, you're only hitting the starter. Plus, your valve cover harnesses will be unplugged as well so nothing is gonna fire.

Glad I'm not the only one... the GP's are really only a pain when the injectors are in. When I've done them with the injectors out, it's been pretty easy. A thread or three away from being unscrewed all the way, pull off my socket, then finger it out. When the GP is out all the way, it stays in the socket when I try to pull it out and then I can't manipulate the socket away from the rocker and then it all hangs up (won't make sense unless you've tried it). Now that I've done injector O-rings so many times, it's so easy that at only $50, I'd would recommend doing that when/if someone does GP's.

Just me, though... my $.02.

I think my rear passenger side injector will not clear whatever box is sitting adjacent to the engine valve. If this is the heater box, how do you remove the vacuum reservoir? I didn't see any bolts fastening it, so tried to pry with a screwdriver. I got one corner up, but met alot of resistance and didnt want to break anything. I'll take a picture and link it if that will help. Going to get working on the other injectors for now, but will have to cross this road eventually to get that last injector out. Any help is appreciated.

The reservoir is attached to the side of the heater box with a couple screws. I had to pull the insulation off the heater off first... But the injectors WILL clear.
