I beileve i have a warp head on my truck urg ! I just got done replacing my radiator, aterpump and took out my thermostat. I was looking underneath the truxk after i stop and there was a good sie poodle water under it. After getting underneath my truck i can see some water on the block were the heads meet. I look on top but it looks like its coming from below the manifold. Do you guys think my assumption is right, if so you know any good places to buy some OEM heads? I live in dallas but willing to make a trip ( not to far ) if somebody has a good set avaliable.
Hey Rhino, welcome to FTE.
Since you just changed out your radiator and water pump it's POSSIBLE that you've just got some extra coolant in these places. You know, spilled coolant. I wouldn't go spending money until I was sure I really needed to. Some things to keep an eye on after driving the truck for a while are oil in the radiator (it'll float on top, fairly easy to see), coolant on your dipstick (milky looking crud), coolant getting into a piston will make a fairly large cloud of white smoke when you start her up. Does the engine run any different than before? Rough idle or rough under speed? I'd drive it a little bit first and watch to see if there are more puddles anywhere.
You can also do a compression test to see if there's a leak.
That is unless you're just fishin for a reason to spend some money......
Well it does run a little ruff at idle, but a little smoke when i start it but thats it. Um it comeing fromthe back part of the block. I look all up front and nothing i can see. Would you think maybe a blown head gasket ?
Could just be the head gasket. See if you can borrow or rent a cooling system pressure tester. Then you can pressurize the cooling system and possibly see where the leak is coming from.
You could have a coolant leak at the head gasket that doesn't involve the cylinder seal. It might be leaking from the coolant passage to the outside. In that case, your compression could still be good and it'll run fine. Just leak.
A compression test would be a good idea just for peace of mind and to know where you're at.
When you pressurize the cooling system, you're really placing the system under a load so any weak spots will show up easier. If there is a leak between the cooling system and the cylinder, after being under pressure for a while and the coolant leaks into the cylinder, you'll know it.
I had my friend come over last night and he did the coolant pressure test. When we built up hat pressure it was pouring out !! So for the time being if i lift the lever on the radiator cap to relieve the pressure and drive it stays nice and cool. So this weekend i'm buying a over haul kit. Just replace all the old gaskets and seals, since it has close 180,000 miles on it.
Question i was thinking about , could the HEAD bolt work its way loose enough to make a gap big enough to leak the water?
