Getting to Know Your Engine 101

Ok guys, I'm sure this question has been answered many times before so if there is a link to the discussion feel free to tell me to shut up and read. I am novice at best when it comes to engine's. Something I have noticed in some/most of these discussion's is labeling 351's with 351w, 351m, and 351 Cleveland. Here's my bonehead question, what is the difference and how can I tell which one I have? I have the same question for the tranny. How can I tell which one I have? (By the way, bought the truck used and not much paper work came with it, see sig) Thanks for your input.

Considering your rig is a 95, it will be the only 351 left in production at that time, the 351W.

The 351C or Cleaveland was offered in mustangs/rancheros/torino's etc in the early to mid 70's and was phased out of production.

The 351M was used in the early 70's to early 80's in most luxury cars and trucks.

The windsor came out in 69 i belive and ceased production in trucks in 96 i belive.

As for your trans, you've more than like likey got the E40D.

Do you have an Overdrive button on your shifter??

If you've got a manual trans, then more than likely, you've got a M5OD, not a bad transmission, if the truck is just a cruiser, or a light hauling truck.

Thanks for the info Tim, that cleared it up for me.

And I do have AOD, so I guess it is an E40D.

I appreciate the help.

the 351C and 351M were both used in trucks as well, also there was a 400 that was based off of the 351C.
