Steering Box Failure?

So hears the deal on my 96 cc i think the steering box is going out. It was working just fine i shut if off and now it is harder to steer and will not center on a straight paved road. If anyone has experienced this problem please tell me befor i put a new box on and find out its the pump instead. Thanks Chad.

Never happened to me yet but jack it up with both wheels off the ground and turn it with the motor off and on. See or hear or feel anything unusual.

Check your fan belt tensioner, mine was shot and giving me fits!! Thought I needed ball joints and everything else, truck would surge side to side etc.... Tensioner was so worn out the belt would start to flex before the power steering pump as I started to turn and then suddenly slip past the pulley and leave me with no powersteering!!

Oh wow! Mine appears to be fairly new judging by its color. I believe my problem is the pump. I can hear it groaning when i turn.

All the problems you have mentioned are all connected to the steering column.......maybe check everything there too.

I'd give the steering column a once over for sure.

the Tilt bushings can cause some steering issues.

Rag joint could be all thats going bad too and causing binding.
There are also 2 u-joints too? (i forgot, might just be 1)

I'd change out your pump fluid a few times instead of just replacing the pump.

People usually overlook the pump fluid and never change it.

I run synthetic ATF in mine.
