86 dash to 89 dash

Ok I have a 86 f250 as my signature says I was wondering if I could cut and splice and sotter (I can't spell) then liquid electrical tape then wrap it in electrical tape then wire loom them all or is it gonna be more difficult than that? Both are xlt both have all the same gauges so it should be that simple right?

No idea what it takes personally, but from what i understand 80-91 dashes are cake to change. That being said, it cant be that hard to use a 92-97 dash either. Worst case scenario you end up changing some sending units. Someone you might try getting ahold of, if im remembering right, is Dyoung14. Him and im sure others, have brick dashes in the 80-86 style. Might try OB or PSN to look for him

it will be alot of work. the 86 has a square dash with square gauges, the 87 and newer has an oval dash. you will need to replace or fabricate just about everything from the firewall out.

I believe the gauge clusters use the same connectors despite being physically different shapes and styles. (Though it wouldn't hurt to double check the wiring scheme from one to the other to verify they're in the same locations). You will however have an issue with the fuel gauge. When Ford did the body/interior change, they also changed the ohm values of the fuel tank sending units. If I remember right, with an 86 sending unit on a later cluster, the gauge will ready empty at a full tank and will read ~ 1/4 tank when empty

Im 95% sure that the two dashes themselves are interchangable, as in the bolt into the cab in the same way. 80-early97 are more or less the same vehicle. Beds, cabs and front clips all are interchangable from what ive been seeing. But in order to use the 89 gauges you would have to use the 89 dash is what im trying to say i guess, but i wasnt sure about the wiring, gauge / sending unit ranges, etc.

From what I have seen from removing my entire parts trucks dash it looks the same and where could I find the ohm ratings for these different dashes? And could I put in resisters to make this work?

There is a gauge voltage regulator behind the dash somewhere. but i was refering to the ranges the gauge / senders use. For instance, my fuel tank has the 89 sending unit running to the 79 gauge.. as a result when its full it reads empty, and when it almost empty it will start reading full, quick like. and when it says 3/4 tank you dont go no mo' lol I know that my 79 has an actual diaphragm oil sending unit, meaning it actually measure pressure, i believe the 80's are also like this, however at some point they changed to a switch type pressure sending unit that once the sensor hits 7lbs i think, your gauge reads good oil pressure.

but yes, the dashes should swap "easy" in a manner of speaking. Fun fact, 67-97 rear windows will interchange also. Well at least a 95 window will go in a 79, and bumpside should be the same as dents, therefor brick, slant and obs should in theory be the same.
