I have always been a ford truck fan but im new to the site and also new to diesels i just recently checked my fluids and i noticed im in dire need of tranny fluid it isnt bone dry but it could def. use some i get to looking around for what kind goes in but the numbers i found arent matching autozone's and o'reilies numbers i currently own a 1999 F-250 super duty with the 7.3 turbo diesel can anyone tell me where to find what fluid i use?

I went throught this same experience recently. The problem is that when your truck was new, it used MERCON fluid which was produced under a Ford license. So your dip stick still says MERCON. Some years ago, however, Ford put out a technical bulletin upudate that now calls for MERCON V in your tranny. You can still use MERCON, however, it is not recommended because the quality control that the Ford license used to ensure is no longer in place.
Your owners manual also calls for MERCON and probably even has a warning about using anything else. That makes it hard to be sure that your auto parts store is giving you the correct information.
