Slow to engage E40D

My '91 7.3 E40D has gotten slower about engaging. Reverse has been a lil sluggish for a while but now forward has started this also. Trans feels fine and has actually felt better, except the pause before engaging the desired gear.
I have posted a lot on this truck and my issues and have STILL not had the codes checked but am going to try to this week. Just curious if its mechanical or not.
Thanks as always

The way the e4od is designed reverse takes a bit to engage, as all the other clutch packs have to be engaged before it can get to reverse. As the trans gets older and you lose friction material on the clutch plates it can take even longer. I'm guessing yours trans could use a refresh with some new clutches and such.

Ok, that makes sence. An automatic trans is one thing I've never taken apart and until you've taken something apart it's hard to understand how it works haha or it's that way for me. I assumed it was worn when I bought it so as long as its just age I'm fine w that

Drive it to the ground, and swap a 5 speed in

Sonnax and TransGo offer a fix for the low boost problem. Simply an upgraded L/R boost valve.

Thats to much work.

More like run it to the ground, and swap in a built E4OD.

Much easier that way.

5spd is what I wanted but I only gave $1500 for the truck. The 7.3 hit every lick, body is in good shape minus 2 places and truck suspension is still firm so I figured even if the trans was shot, it's still a good buy.
Would a shift kit be a good (temporary) fix until I rebuild it?

a shift kit wouldn't hurt.but the part track speaks of,giving you your delayed reverse is this:
http://www.sonnax.com/system/announcement/36424-01K.pdf
it goes in the front pump.so the trans would have to be dropped, the converter pulled, and then the front pump simply taken out to be able to install it.

I agree swap in a built e4od when it dies. They are not bad transmissions but they get such a bad rap here in the idi forums.

Or start rebuilding this one while its still salvagable. That depends on how much you rely on the truck however. A swap with another E4OD or a ZF5 would mean a minimum down time but cost more up front.

The clutch clearance for the reverse pack is also quite large even from factory. The reverse piston takes a bit of time to take up that slack before the clutch can grab. Most rebuild manuals state that there isn't even any clearance speck

Ford remedied most of that by making valve body tweaks and upgrading the pump volume (which had many other benefits in addition to reducing reverse delay).

The older AOD in my F150 smacks into reverse before I can even lock the lever in place. Shifting was always lightning fast too, but it may have a shift kit - not positive.

My E4OD doesn't take long to get into reverse. It's there within a second. I have driven trucks where you are almost tapping your finger on the wheel waiting for it. I wonder if I already have those upgrades installed.

.

There are a couple of ways to reduce this clerance. Thicker steels is one way. no machine work required.

Add another friction and steel to the pack. Adding more material to the pack will require machine work.

Either way getting the clerence reduced to .20"-.40" makes a huge differance in the delay.
