I am getting some odd road noise that started on a recent trip (4500 miles towing 6500lbs or so). It sounds almost like I got a new set of nobby tires and the road noise has just increased, kind of a moaning noise. I don't really notice it below about 25-30mph but then it starts up. I was thinking wheel bearing but there is no really appreciable difference when turning one way or the other.
I'm going to jack it and see if I find anything pointing to the wheel bearing. Any other ideas?

I have an 03 Expy with the same noise. In other threads, most posters lean toward the ring and pinion in the rear differential. Mine has 78K miles on it
the noise has been there for the last 8k miles. I have changed fluids twice with no noticeable difference. The second change was with Royal Purple and friction modifier.
There is a Ford TSB (TSB 05-23-3).
I found a local shop that specializes in rear differential work. They quoted $1200 for a ring and pinion replacement but wouldn't guarantee that it would eliminate the noise.
I opted to live with it for now.
Interesting. My 03 also a noise that I describe as a howl, most noticible 55-60 and seems only speed related (no changes while turning). It's been doing this the last 10k (at 93k now) and I've thought it's coming from the front so maybe a hub but can't convince myself 100% it's coming from the front and since turning doesn't have an affect....
Mine is a 2WD so there's no front differential.
Captain, I would expect a change of fluid and the friction modifier would at least cause a change in the noise.

Interesting TSB there. Live with it seems scary to me and often causes more problems than it's worth.
It seems like this is a tough one to pinpoint. What is the easy way to figure out if my differential is the problem?
Maybe also of note, the noise continues while I am in neutral.
My '01 EB has a noise like knobby tires rubbing sometimes when I pull out from a stop. At first I thought it was only when doing so with the wheels turned, but now I'm not sure. I'm keeping track of when it does it. I don't see any where the tires are rubbing, but that's what it sounds like.... baffled for now.
