I have a 95 F450 Power Stroke automatic. It is getting hard to turn when stopped or going slow and makes a wineing noise. Not sure if it is the power steering pump or the hydro boost. What do you guys think?
I've got a similar issue. It's been that way since I got the truck 4 years ago. It's gotten very slowly worse. I don't get a whine, but a groan in the steering wheel. I flushed the fluid last night with no change. The wheel turned really easy while we were flushing it, but once we sealed it back up, it went right back to what it was doing before.
Thanks for the input guys. I did change the fluid in the pump and it did not change. That is a better description (a groan in the stering wheel). I guess I will put in a new pump next rainy day.
Well, finally got a rainy day to change the pump. It was a little bit of a project but we got it done. We took the complete mounting bracket off, it was much easier that way. Had to borrow a pully set off a buddy of mine. It was the only way to get that damn pully off. All said and done it is like brand new now. Turns easily when stopped and no more growling.
UPDATE - Two days after putting in the new pump it started acting up again. Peddal started to stick at the up position and every once and a while I would loose steering and the brake. I would turn the truck off and turn it back on and it would be OK. Very strange. I could not find a parts place that stocked the hydro boost and the master cylinder so I ordered them and put them in the other day. Truck seems fine and has not acted up again.
