5.4L making bad noises...

It could be bad knock sensor too. Mine does similar noise and it has bad sensor code.

Would that really be as loud and nasty sounding as some of the other possibilities?

Possibly. Mine sounds like it is about to come a part before it warms up.

Any vibrations with it? This engine seems pretty smooth, but the dipstick oscillates a bit more than seems normal.

No. no vibrations at all. Just noisy.
