Cool Tool Alert

Anyone ever frustrated with a short circuit and going through a handful of ATC, ATM or ATO fuses before its found and repaired? This might be a good idea: IPA® Tools - #8005 -FUSE SAVER®

I stumbled across this site looking for something else but once there found a few things quite useful to have in the tool box. Its worth spending a few minutes looking around if you're doing any sort of vehicle electrical work.

I could have used that a couple months back, I bet I went through 30 fuses on that Sable.
Only downside is that if you keep tripping and resetting it, you could overheat the wiring and cause further problems. Same goes for using a self-resetting circuit breaker.

Ford_Six you're correct----I'm thinking a tool for mechanics at this level wouldn't encounter or create such issues though---assuming anyone looking for a short checks things carefully each time there is a fault condition, whether a fuse, circuit breaker or this tool.

Good points though---use with caution!

have seen a similar tool but for the price the tool truck wanted and the amount of use I would get out of it....

Put a lightbulb in series with the fuse. The bulb provides enough resistance to keep everything else from melting. I use crimp type spade connectors, a little tape and it won't short out. light on = short. wiggle wires until the light goes out- you're close to it. by yourself? longer leads so you can dangle it down where you can see it.

No power? I use one of the pocket non contact voltage testers, run it along the wire until it quits beeping

the non-contact tester also works great on those miserable little christmas lights, spread the wires a little, pull a bulb, find out which side is the power side, then test after each bulb. much easier than swapping out each bulb hoping to find what is (hopefully) the only bad one.

There really is no substitute for a decent multi-meter and knowing how to use it.
