Air injection ports

Guys,

I seldom post, but I enjoy reading this forum everyday. I've run into a problem. I want to remove the emissions on my 1986 460. I removed one of the air injection fittings on my LH exhaust manifold. I tried to plug it with a 3/8" pipe plug. It almost fits but its not the right size. What can I use to plug those ports.

Thanks

If I remember correctly, I think they may be 1/2-20 bolts that fit.

Yes, it's going to be a straight thread whatever it is, not a tapered pipe thread. I guess you have already researched the issue and know if you have inspections or not. The air system is big and ugly, and very obvious when it's missing to the emissions/inspection guy.

I live up in the mountains, way out in the boondocks. Our county does not have inspections. It's different in Denver and along the front range. All those counties have inspections.

Today I'll try the 1/2x20 bolt. Then I'll report back. Thanks for the help.

On the 351 W motors it's a 5/8-11 for the thermactor ports on the heads.

Air system

I know that everyone likes to remove those things. But on my 76 that I would bracket race every now and then the truck ran better with it connected!! Go figure

I have read that you can just plug them with an old spark plug. I'm not sure about the 460.

If the spark plugs thread count is 11 TPI and and the diameter is 5/8" I bet it would be very possible. However, a couple bolts could be bought for less than $1 to do it right.

Before I did my Cummins swap, I eliminated my thermactor pumps etc. I found mine nearly frozen up, so we pinched the lines and welded them up. As for emissions, clean air etc. These motors were so choked down. I eliminated my emissions stuff, swapped intake, ignition and did some carb work and I picked up mileage. So, one would assumed the engine was running more efficiently and cleaner, all while making more power. Funny that as of late, as emissions standards have tightened up, they have created lower MPG's, so what's the benefit?

Those are the same results I have experienced with all the Ford trucks we have gutted emissions on. They have better power and get better mpg's as well as become easier to wrench around on. My neighbor James opens the hood up and starts ripping stuff out and throwing it away. The truck owners are a little shocked at first, but, are always pleased with the results.

I'm pretty sure the OP is asking about the A.I.R. injection ports in the exhaust manifold runners and not the thermactor ports in the back of each head.
