Alright so, I'm installing my aftermarket deck after class today. 1979 door speakers are not going to cut it for me, so out they come.
I hate to sound foolish but uh... How do you get the door panels off without breaking them? I've heard I can use a special tool but someone has to have found another way that doesn't involve buying a tool I'll only use once
I heard take a fork and remove the 2 center tongs. Buy the right tool, you will always own a vehicle and can use it again. Trust me you will use it again and again.
If you have a harbor freight near you they have the tools to pull the door panels without damaging them. Basically it is a long thin prybar with a notch cut out to fit around the metal tab that pushes into the door. You pry out the tabs along the outside of the door, but pry on the metal tab no the plastic or you will crack it. There is a set of screws in the door cup you will also need to remove.
Thats the problem I'm nowhere near a harbour freight right now.. Or any auto store for that matter.
Was hoping to do the job tonight so I was curious if anyone has found a way without the tool
every other way without the tool usually results in a broken door panel.
maybe you're luckier than I am, but as others have said ... get the tool, you will thank yourself in the long run. I thought the same thing as you, the i would only need it the one time, but trust me, you will use it over and over and over again.
these door panels are brittle, i wouldn't even attempt it without the tool on my truck.
