Another oil (?) leak

I have a 97 F250 Powerstroke diesel that has about 51,000 miles. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed what I thought was an oil leak, so took it to the dealer's service department. They found a loose oil filter, injected some dye & told me to bring it back if it happened again. It did.

Then, after a most unrewarding day of my truck being ignored at the local Ford dealership, I was told that I had a "puddle" of oil. or fuel, on top of the engine. They did not know what it was or where it came from, but I chose not to let them keep it another day, deciding instead to take it elsewhere.

Now, the question is whether it's a little something that I could locate & correct myself. Another question is whether driving it 40 miles or so to the next closest dealer would hurt.

This is the first problem I've had with the truck since I bought it new, in 1998.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Read the reply on my question. Sounds like we might have the same problem. (7.3 Oil Leak)

It could be the high pressure oil pump, high pressure lines going to the heads or turbo pedistal seals. Since it already has dye in the oil, get an ultraviolet blacklight and inspect for the leak in the dark.

Thanks very much for your replies. I DID read the answer to your question, 13hondacr250; but I'm new & didn't know the protocol, so started another thread. It ocurred to me that it might be the same thing that's happening to your truck.

However, I am technically challenged, to put it mildly. I'm going to have to take it somewhere, as what is suggested to do is beyond me since I don't know a high pressure hose from a garden hose. I use the truck to pull my horse trailer (horses, I understand).

IF it is a loose hose, is it going to make matters worse to drive to another dealership (40 miles or so)? Or should I take it to the nearest mechanic? I ask because someone said it's probably a warranty repair since it probably has to do with the engine or fuel system.

Thanks.
