So this past week, I've worked tirelessly installing a turbo on my 89. Its apparently off an 84, and supposedly worked fine. However on my truck it's only making 3 pounds of boost. 4lbs if i really let it wind out in 1st gear. I understand that leaks can cause this, but the only leak i can find is an exhaust leak after the turbo. im not sure why or how that would affect anything. The snail is RTV'd to the turbo, and to the intake. The other thing is, im making no smoke. zero. no matter how much throttle i give, no smoke. So my question is, with these symptoms of no power no smoke, is it safe to say i need to turn my fuel up? or does that actually point to a leak? I have a friend tell me that replacing my fuel filter is gonna do the trick. any thoughts?
also any tips on getting the pyro sensor out of my exhaust manifold would be really helpful. i have a new one and just cant get the old one out. its stuck.
After installing a boost gauge and seeing low numbers - I looked for leaks on mine and found none. Turning up the fuel did not produce a noticable increase.
Adjusting the wastegate provided the best gain - from 3-4PSI to around 10-11PSI. I know there is more gain - but with a stock, non-turbo motor - I stopped there.
Non wastegated setups are usually only good for 8ish psi and boost is controlled by fueling so you could probably crank yours up. Also, your not going to make a whole lot of boost in first gear unless theres a good load behind it. Turbos need heat to spool, which means any situation calling for more fuel.
