I got a 86 f250 6.9L and today it died on me camping in the bush. went to start up the truck after sitting for two days.
it turned over at first but didnt start. figured it was the battery. tried charging it for a long time from a running truck. and it stopped turning over.
tried jumping it at the relay and starter, tried tapping the starter with a hammer.
now all it does when i turn the ignition is make the relay click and thats it.
no it didint. if it did it would still turn over would it not?
Yes.
Assuming that your diagnosis has been correct so far (jumping the relay did nothing)
It can be either:
1) Bad starter
2) Bad starter connections (check all the cable connections, and cut the rubber sheeth for about 1" at both connections to check the cable for internal corrosion. Also, the mount from the starter to the transmission must be clean, for this is the ground)
3) Hydro-locked engine. This means water or oil sitting in the combustion chambers. Water and oil are generally incompressible fluid, and will definitely keep your engine from turning.
It's probably 1 or 2. But option 3 does happen. Bad head gaskets and the like.
If you have had starting problems....i can 99.9999999999999% guarentee its your starter....
i will not go quite that far but i think it would be the best place to start
i would drop the starter and hook it to the battery with the jumper cables, just bump it over do not try to make a good connection, you just want to see if it will spin at all, it not then you know it is bad
and just because it spins does not mean that it is good but it is a place to start
if all of your connections are good and clean and it would not turn over by jumping the solenoid then it is more than likely the starter
if you want to check to see if its hydro-locked the safest way i know is to pull the glow plugs and see if it will turn over then
