I have a 1989 ford f250 plow truck. Was running just fine last week. I went to start it up yesterday and it clicked a few times but did not start. I have tried to jump it, but when I try to turn it on it just clicks once then nothing. The battery seams fine lights work and the plow and radio all work. I recently just cleaned the injectors, put in a new starter, new batttery, spark plugs all look good. Also have a new fuel pump and relay. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh it has a 5.8 liter engine
Check the fender mounted starter selonoid for loose or coroded wires, especialy the little lead that slides on the screw sitting. Try testing it with a light tester, or maybe your new starter is bad, I would check all the conections first.
Just went through that non-starting issue on my E350 460. Turned the key and heard the relay click once. Tyhat indicated the relay is OK. The starter did not engage at all. To check if the starter is OK, go to the starter relay and directly connect the positive post of the battery to the output side of the starter relay using a jumper cable (be sure the tranny is in park or neutral and the key is turned on). If the truck starts, then the starter is OK and the probability is high that that you have a bad neutral safety switch. It's on the side of the transmission and prevents the engine from starting in any gear. That's what went on my rig.
Best ot clean your grounds up before you spend money on parts. A bad ground or corroded ground wire is quite typical in these trucks and have been known to cause this problem too. There are several ground locations. Frame, engine, and more on the body. I'll see if I can find the list again and repost.
Thank you for your reply's. Turns out the starter and the ring gear were locked up. Cost me about $150 to find that out. It is tocold to do any work on it myself here in minnesota. They got it working but I'm afraid it will happen again. I don't want to pay them to change the ring gear any ideas as to what I could do to prevent it?
