Hi everybody. I am getting ready to mount my NOS tailgate (1982) on my NEW bed. I am nervous at the prospect of drilling holes in that virgin steel. I have decided on the internal latches, but I still have not made up my mind on what type of supports to use. What hardware are you guys going with? I have seen the scissor type, the nylon strap, and even old seatbelts. Let me know what you like the best. Thanks, John
John I saw a truck last week that had a new aftermarket bed and the guy drilled a hole in the side of the tailgate and the bed lip and put a bolt through with acorn head on both sides. Looked real neat. He said he never hauled anything other than a$$ and he didn't let the tailgate down. He had a 429 in his with a blower.
Have sen some that had a sliding thumb latch mounted in the tailgate roll. Let us know what yuo decide and send pictures.
I thought of using the "nothing approach" also because I don't plan on putting down my tailgate either. However, the problem comes in with my paranoia. My wife will be driving this truck also, and there is a very thin chance she may put the tailgate down for some unknown reason. If that happens, then there goes the paint job. I'm planning on going to the Summit Store in Reno this weekend for a truck show. Does anybody know if they carry tailgate assessories? Thanks, John
John,
I went with the stainless stell custom tailgate set with latch from Sacramento Vintage Ford (part # 8418-16) $150. I have pix if you'd like to see them. E-mail me and I'll shoot em back.
Or, if you want originals, I just met a salvage yard guy who says he has about 10 (so figure 2-3) of our year trucks. I'm going there Friday to see about a headlight switch. Want me to check out the original tailgate chains for ya???
Daryl
