I'm stumped. Have a 2000 Explorer XLS with the OHV 4.0. The last few weeks my brakes have gotten progressively worse. When you step on the pedal the brakes will grab and start to stop. As the truck is stopping the pedal will loosen and the truck begins to slide. If you step back on the pedal right away it will engage the brakes again. I installed new pads and rotors about 3,000 miles ago. There are no leaks anywhere. I always thought the booster would cause a pedal to go stiff if it was bad so I ruled that out. It seemed to me like a bad seal or master cylinder so I installed a new one yesterday. Bench bled the master and the lines after installing. Still slipping while braking. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Not sure if it "could" be the booster, if there is a bad vaccum, air somewhere, or something else. Really want to get to the bottom of this soon.
20 years ago it would have been the brake master cylinder-- your right.. Today you have ABS / computer/ that can feather the brakes so it will not lock up. Could be related to that. Sorry i cant hemp on a test procedure.
Thats what I was worried about. Figured I'd get some kind of light if the ABS was an issue, but maybe not. I really ain't too up on the computer stuff. In the process of rebuilding and hotrodding my Mark VIII and thats alot more than I've tackled in the past. May just end up taking the truck to a shop. Hate to do that, but I've tried everything that makes sense and nothing has changed. Thanks for your input. Have a "good" used Master Cylinder for sale if anyone needs one......lol.
Look in your book and see if there is a fuse to disable the ABS.. then you will probalby get a code telling you it failed, but the brakes should resort to manual operation ??
