Three days ago I touched up a spot on the inner box side. I sanded off the surface rust, cleaned it then coated it with 3 coats of rustoleum bare metal primer that were put on about 4-5 minutes apart. It said on the can that it could be topcoated in minutes, but I waited 30min. then applied 5 coats of rustoleum glossy black about 4 minutes apart.
Today I checked it and the paint is dry to the touch, but it is still soft enough that I can cut into it with my fingernail. I know I probably got a little carried away and got the pain on thick, so could that be why it's not fully cured yet? Also the temps around here are in the mid 60's at day and 40's at night. Is this paint going to ever fully cure or am I going to have to redue it?
Another question, i've been letting the truck sit in the garage but I really would like to use it, so can I drive it with the paint not fully cured or will the paint be compromised? Since it's on the inner wall it will only get dusty and not catch any rocks. I would also not drive the truck if it would get wet.
i finally got the paint dried. But,the gloosy paint doesn't seem really durable and I'm worried that it will chip off. Should I go over it with some of that rubberized spray on undercoating or should I just cover it with a clearcoat. The area I painted is on the inner box side behind the rear wheelwell so I'm not too worried about it looking pretty, but I need it to be durable because it will catch some road debris.
My only real worry is that even though I sanded the metal really good and then went over it with a stops rust primer, followed be a stops rust paint, that the rust might eventually come back. If it does and I have some type of rubberized/plastic coating over the paint I won't be able to see the rust reforming until it goes through to the outside of the metal.
