Ok guys! this problem has been goin on long enough! almost a year. I have searched, asked mechanics and even brought my truck to my local shop. all of this nonsence and i know this site will answer my question and problem.
My truck is bogging down or has lack of power when im under load. Towing and going up a hill is were it is the worst. It comes and goes randomly. Its almost like someone is putting there hand over my exaust then letting it off. the rpms dont drop at all just a loss of power. i hope every one understand that. lol
What i have so far is that my fuel pump is a variable speed type. only found on the 1999 model. witch is what i have. Could this be my problem? and how do i fix this? please ford gurus! sorry about the long thread.
I've got a 2006 F350 with the 5.4l; only about 55,000 miles on it.
I've posted before about how, last summer, when I punched the gas to go up hills (not towing anything), the engine would cough and sputter and could not work up any power until I let up on the accelerator. The check engine light flashed very lightly, but did not actually come on.
The mechanic that I use told me that it was the ethanol in the gas that was causing the problem. He dumped in some high power injector cleaning fluid into my gas tank (not sure what brand it was; he said you can't buy it in stores), and I've dumped a bottle of injector cleaner that I bought each time that I've filled up the gas.
It worked. After a few tankfuls, the engine runs smooth again.
Give it a shot. Hopefully it is a simple fix like mine was.
Mine was doing this exact same thing and it ended up being the fuel pump. I ended up letting Ford replace it for me. Cost me around 700 deer. It might be worth your time and money to make sure it is not a C.O.P going bad too. Bad C.O.P's will make your truck run like garbage, however they should be much easier to diagnose than the fuel pump. The mechanics should be able to see it missing on a cylinder if it is a C.O.P.
This is the 3rd Fuel Pump that my truck has eaten, and I don't run the tank dry very often either. The second pump was a NAPA job and I am hoping that my Motorcraft pump is going to last a LOT longer than the aftermarket pump that I had to put on it. I was on the road towing a trailer with motorcycles in it to Cocoa beach.
yea i agree with the c o p boots also.. i had one go bad on my truck and it was real sluggish.. also i had a knock senser go and that made my truck run like 4 banger with no nut. the knock sensor did not throw me a check engine light but i plugged in my sct and read the code and it was the knock sensor.. she is fixed and RUNS LIKE A CHAMP.
Your truck is acting just like my old F-150. The problem was the ceramic matrix of the catalytic converter crumbled. Large chunks were moving around in the catalytic converter, blocking the exhaust flow.
It took over a year and 6 visits to various mechanics to figure the problem out, simply because the chunks of ceramic would shift around to allow flow. A mechanic finally disconnected the exhaust at the y-pipe and went for a spin. Power was restored immediately.
Thanks for the help guys! My fuel pump is about a two years old. So I dont THINK it is that. I will check my cat first that is an easy test. No codes have come on since i owned my truck. Yes the cel works. lol It would throw a code if it had a missfire. Last time I had my truck in the shop they said my truck fuel pump has different speeds. could it be my sensor thing that tells my pump to speed up when i hit the gas? Has anyone heard of such a thing?
Sometimes the cops will go bad, missfire, and NOT throw a code. Might have water in your gas. Run the truck hard and check the cat. Also try to clean your MAF censor. Do the cheap stuff first then go on to the spark plugs and coil packs. Make sure your new plugs are gapped correctly.
