agian last night one of my fan blades hit the radiator and put a semi circle stratch in it that was just deep enough to put a whole in one area. this is the second time the first was worst. i can't figure out why the clutch fan seems to be stable and not move at all. this same thing happened about 3 weeks ago too. what could it be and how do i go about fixing it?
not sure of the difference. I'm still a young mechanic. the fan is metal. aren't flex fans made of something else? It is a pretty heavy duty radiator ( like 2 inches thick.) maybe i should put in a smaller one that doesn't come so close to the fan?
Either your fan is too close, the rad is loose (as Rhetor suggested), or possible the motor mount(s)/tranny mount are loose or broken. How close is the fan blade to the rad? Mine is about 1-1/2", with the clutch assembly at about 3/4". As cool as the 300 runs, you don't need to be much closer. My shroud isn't even "all" there, and I don't have overheating problems.
Somehow you are getting some flex. Is the "semi circle scratch" on the top, bottom, or off to one side (which) of the radiator? This might help diagnose the source of flexure. Loose tranny bolts might allow the engine to "tip" up in the rear , dip down in the front, and "scratch" the top of the rad. Loose motor mounts might allow the engine to creep forward a bit. Backing off with the fan blade would be the easiest fix, provided no other source of flex can be found.
Sounds like a bad transmission mount, or you broke the bolts on the pass. side engine mount. If it is a manual or a 4x4, does the shifter jump around when you get on it?
From lookin at his sig, if it is stock it should be a clutch type fan because of the year. Shouldnt the fan clutch hit way before the blades, I dont think it could tilt enough forward to make the blade hit first without bending a blade. Were you romping on the motor when this happened? I have a body lift and my rubber mounts for my cab are shot and I launched so hard the other day my fan hit the core support (because of the body lift)
nope i've been being nice to her latley and not gettin on it since it happened the first time. it is a stick and i do notice alittle jiggle in the shifter but not much about the same as my other one and i had no problems with that one. but the 4x4 shifter doesn't shake at all.
You most likely have some "looseness" to have the fan blade deflecting into the core. Again, it might be something in a former water pump/clutch/fan replacement that brought the fan TOO close. The "stock" water pump appears to come in different lengths and you might have ended up with a "long nose" one at some point. . The fact that it's hitting top right - drivers view - suggests a Ford_Six solution. Your radiator is mounted tight - right? An electic fan would do the trick too..., it's just that it wouldn't address the CAUSE unless the fan blade is JUST too close.
The manual gear shift would have more of a subtle "jump" rather than a "shake" (if it were a loose engine or tranny mount) - when you go over a dip or in combo with a turn. I still have to suspect the tranny or engine mount. I've had broken ones that "looked" completely normal. You have to jack the engine up a bit to be sure.
