I'm going to give up the buckets idea and replace the bench with a later one. I want to avoid the "high-back" thing. Anyone know the last year for a "low" seatback, or one that has headrests I can saw off?
Eric

I've got a 95-96 seat and it's no taller than the factory bench. And it has removable headrests
Replaced the 65 bench w/ 86 Lariat seat, it's a hybrid, 68 bench seat frame and 86 Lariat backs. Since I intended to have the seat reuphostered I removed the seat cover and found the 'high back' head rest was nothing more than and extention of thin gage sheet metal, separate from the metal structure of the seat, my 4 1/2" grinder removed in a matter of minutes. Now the seat sets level with the bottom of the rear window.
Daveengelson - any chance you can post a picture of your bench seat solution? I'm interested in your Lariat fold down solution. Thanks! It never occurred to me to use bottom and back from different years.
Did not occur to take pic w/ center arm rest down, can take additional if needed. Had a 68 bench seat, donated the back section and kept the bench for the tracks and metal frame. Then took the 86 Lariat back section and attached it to the 68 bench. Took the cover and padding from the 86 Lariat bench and tossed it into the 68 bench frame so the uphostery shop could use it for a pattern. It may have been possible to have taken the tracks off the 65 and swapped them for the 86 and not have gotten into mixing and matching but it was during my infancy stage of learning the options open to 61-66 upgrades. After 35 years my backside finally wore out the bench and given 68 seats. Did not care for the height of the 68 bench thus stumbled across the mix and match possibilities and ended up with the 68-Lariat hybrid, found it sets little lower and contoured, little more comfortable for an sagging and aging backside.
If fortunate to find the right combo in a 'pic n pull' can do some mixing and matching and leave paying for just 1 seat
Used small grinder to cut the bench retainers from hitting the back of the tank. Swap meet came across set of retractable seat belts, got tired of closing the door on the standard lap type
Not being a flatlander, if I were to change anything it would be to either see if the center arm cup holders could be made deeper, or perhaps look for back section w/ deeper holder, on these mountain roads there's the possibility drink ends up in your lap.
