I have 1983 Ford F250 460 with dual tanks. I fill up my front tank and when I drive my rear tank begins to fill up with gas I believe is coming from my front tank. I believe this due to the fact my front tank drains quickly and my rear tank seems to get more gas than I had in it previously. If the rear tank gets to full it seems to pump it out the vent lineand pour on the ground Is the problem with the fuel tank selector switch on the frame rail. If not please post solutions and or tests.
Thanks
Brian
It sounds like a problem with the fuel tank selector valve. Does this truck have the hot fuel option (electric pumps in the tanks), or does it have a mechanical pump?
Ok, I would go ahead and replace the selector valve on the frame rail. It could be either on the driver's side frame right under the rear cab corner, or on the rear crossmember over the rear axle.
Thanks for all you help. I think your information is correct. Any suggestion on a location to purchase it. I was looking somewhere besides a dealer. If you have a part number it would be very helpful. The selector is on the frame rail just behind the driver's side.
Thanks
Brian
Can anyone tell me if the check valves on my fuel pumps could be the problem with my rear tank getting filled by the front tank and causing the rear tank to over fill. It over fills so much that fuel will start flowing out of the tank. I know the front tank is putting the fuel in the back tank due to the fact the front one drains quickly and my rear tank starts to get more fuel than when I filled it up. I think my selector switch is working that is why I ask if it could be the check valve in the rear pump is the problem. Both pumps were recently replaced.
Thanks
Brian
I think the easiest way to test the source of the problem would be to switch it to the front tank, remove the line from the rear tank, and put that in a bucket or oil collection pan. Run the engine for a few minutes, looking underneath. If gas is coming out of the line for the rear tank, the valve is bad. If not, then it could be the pump. But the valve is a much cheaper and easier place to start. They can be had at Advance Auto for around $40.
Yes,
I know allready that both pumps are working. I have checked that allready. I have heard that there is a check valve in the pump that prevents the tank from cross filling. You say the valve can be purchased at Autozone for $40.00 dollars. Mine is a six port unit. If you have the part number I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Brian
I checked Auto Bone's website, and they don't have it. Advance Auto, Parts America, Checker/Shucks/Kragen have it, for $57.99. The three port one is $35.00. Below is a pic of the six-port one, which should match what is in your truck. You can do a search for Niehoff Ignition p/n UN52 here
