Column and drop

I have a 30' column ordered for my 55 and I was wondering if there is a hard and fast standard for the column drop. I have heard 4.5", but with this much drop it looks like it will make it more difficult to meet the power ram shaft on the Mustand IFS. I understand that there will be 2 u-joints and two shafts along with probably a stabilizing bearing involved, but I am wondering if a 3.5" drop may be better. It could be that the hole the existing column is exiting may be in the wrong place right now. Any suggestions for exit measurements, drops, etc would be great.

I have the 4.5, but I'm starting to think the 3.5 would be better. Maybe a 4.0? If there is such a thing?

Ï replaced the floor plate with one from "No Limit" that relocates the base of the column for an improved steering angle. Only two U-joints and one shaft is necessary for hooking up to a MII. I am only using a 3 1/2 "drop for my F.R. column

Wayne,

Do you have the URL for no limits? Maybe even the measurement from the floor crease, etc and I will fab my own.

Thanks,
Pat

It is No Limit Engineering.
I noticed in Mid Fifty's catalog they are showing three of them with the hole in different positions. The one they are recommending for MII is 5" from botton edge to center of the column. I'm pretty sure that is the same as mine.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the drop dimension only to position the steering wheel?
I have a 4.5" drop and I am planing to reduce it to a 2.5" drop to move the steering wheel closer to the dash. I don't think this will have an effect on the steering linkage.
Maybe someone could shed some light on that...

Don't know if this helps but I used a 30" column going through the stock hole in the floor boards and this is how it worked out. Heidt M2 power unit. 4-1/2" drop. Length of drop has very little effect.

Drop is going to depend on the wheel diameter and center drop, seat height, how much "hangover" you have, and your preferred driving position. Drop length is going to have little to no impact on the hookup between the column and box. I'd suggest making a dummy temporary drop and mocking everything up and sit in it for a while (at least 10-15 min, make motor sound while you pretend to drive if no one else is around) to see if you are happy with the length. Ididit and Flaming River offers several drop lengths for their columns, and you can further adjust with a spacer between the drop and dash bottom.

The effect depends on what percent of your column protrudes through the firewall. The firewall becomes you pivot point. Likely, very little of your column protrudes through, so the effect will probably be minimal. Mine protrudes through at least 8", so a two inch lift would probably result in the bottom of the column dropping about 1/2". Although this is minimal, it might well result having to redo steering linkage and my shift linkage.

I started out at 4.5" drop but ended up at about 3 after I fabbed my seat mounts. I like to sit a bit high in a truck and needed to adjust the column height. I mocked up the mount with wood blocks to begin with. The lower end exits through the original floor panel area but only about half the column, the top half of the column is actually in the upper floor board just above the bend. I made a new floor panel from 16 ga. steel using the two halves as a pattern. pretty simple actually.
