Steering column is an easy place. A Sunpro tach can be had for $30.

"Good" and "cheap" don't normally go together. Just read the included instructions.

Pretty dern easy! 4 wires: 1 to the - of coil (tach test), 1 to 12v+ switched, 1 to your dash lights, and 1 to ground.

SunPro II and now there is a smaller version I'ld probably use. Both are cheap enough and work well enough, this one is about 25 years old now. Back in the '60s my dad had a Sun Super Tach (0-10,000) that he swapped between a couple cars. Later after he had passed, a friend and I were swapping it and my friend droopped it. That thing was built to last forever I think, was three times the weight.

I bought my first Sun Super Tach II in mid '70s, used it in several cars and PUs up into 1984. They are cheap enough but if taken care of, they last.
