is the 1946 2 ton truck thesame cab as the pickup?
if not what are the diff
roy
Not positive on a 46 but on my 40 1 1/2 ton the cab is the same as the pickup except the big truck had the gas tank in the cab under the seat. Fenders, hood, and grill are different on the big truck as well. From what I understand the 40-47 cabs were the same although there may be minor differences.
Not sure when they started putting the flathead 6 in the big trucks. All 3 of my '40's have v-8's but 1 has an 8ba so who knows what it initially had. I do know there is a nice early 50's model short wheel base dump (1 1/2 or 2 ton) on Craig's List in Salem, OR for a good price that has a 6 in it so I do know that the 6's were available in those models. I'm sure there is someone on here that knows a heck of a lot more about this than I do and they will be able to provide the info for sure.
The flathead 6 came out in '41. I'm pretty sure it was available on the 1 1/2 ton truck but I'm not sure if it was an option or not. In the larger trucks the 221 V-8 (11A/21A)was the basic V-8 engine with the 239 (Mercury engine-19A/29A) optional until '45 when the 239 (59A/59AB) became universal with the 6 still available.
The 6 was always the optional motor in both the half ton and big trucks. Ford offered the 6 as a good around town type hauling motor, while selling the 8 as more of a long distsnce high speed (for the time) motor. So 8 was standard, 6 was optional in the '40's.
I've seen those trucks hit 50 although I'm sure that 40-45 would be more suitable. Of course it depends on the gearing and your choices for that are rather slim. People weren't in that much of a hurry 70+ years ago.
my speedo doesn't work but it was screaming because i didn't want to shift the 2speed it was grinding a little? was going aprox 40mph down hill 5mph up hill
the hills here are very steep
Well that sounds par for the course with those old trucks. 40 mph in low range would definetly have that old flattie humming. Is your 2-speed a manual or vacuum shift?
manual shift the linkage is about 14' long well looks that far, the ram for the dump is leaking on it to. i have a project already (64' f250 4x4)
so this truck is sitting for now, had to buy it po is a friend (built the engine 35yrs thats in my 64')

The manual linkage does take some practice. I've seen operators shilft those like they were second nature. Me, I struggled with every 2 speed out there and can still remember the loud buzz from way back there after I missed a shift. F-250 sounds like a good righteous project. Me, I'm kind of stuck with my '47 afterwhich comes a '54 car, afterwhich comes a '42 car. Then I plan to take the rest of the morning off...
