hey guys, heres the deal, 1986 302 top end rebuild, ordered all new head bolts, took a week to get them, they sent 20 long instead of 10 of each long and short. don't want to wait another week for the shorts to get here plus the cost.......
alternatives?
right now, looking at getting 10 grade 8 bolts machined to put the shoulder on them, pricey but still cheaper then ordering, also faster...
Years ago I used FF-S-86 socket head cap screws on my Shelby 289, I kept breaking the regular Ford bolts due to the higher torque specified for the 289 hi-po.
Ranger can you get some ARP stuff from the local parts store quicker? I ran into the same problem when I ordered my ARP headbolts from Summit. They sent some that were too long. I told them what heads I was using and World Products had them spec'd wrong. So that was like a month of waiting. I dont know where you are located (probably should fill out your details in your sig)but , there are usually local speed shops or warehouses close that they can be ordered from . O'Reillys or Advanced should be able to get them pretty quick.
Why not do some overnight or next day air shipping instead of going to a machine shop. I think that would be quicker and probably cheaper.
i am located up in Canada, the local stores want $90 a side for them and they wont sell just the short ones. so i would be looking at around $200 for the set, cheaper on Rock Auto but those are a week away, so basically the machine shop is $80 and $10 for the bolts.......
Could always go to the local salvage yard and grab two more.
Always an option.
Why did they break? I've never had a small-block head bolt break.
no idea why they broke, just got the truck last week for cheap, looks like they were over torqued at one point....wreckers wont part with just 2 bolts, they will only sell the whole engine...

That's crazy!!! I had the same problem when I bought my intake from summit. It came as a packaged deal with a new set of ARP intake bolts. 4 of them were too short and had to use different bolts. Luckily it was the intake so pretty easy to get bolts for that...only going to 35 ft-lbs.
wrote to summit, since it was a summit package, never got a response.
