alright guys! after my baby, my first truck my '96 limited 4x4 that i'd put my heart and soul into was totaled i'd been on the hunt for another explorer. a 5.0 V8 this time.
heres my '96 which i have and will be transferring parts from.
last week i bought a 1998 XLT V8 AWD with 142k and over $2k in work done in the last month. i paid $2300 with a whine from the front. today i replaced all the idler pulleys and tensioner and its perfectly mechanically.
the plans are 3"ish lift, my 31" cooper stts on eagle alloys, limited front bumper, painted rear bumper, swap my tan interior in. then a custom 2-tone paint again..deciding on colors. plus alot more i'm sure.
here she is now, needs alot of small cosmetics but its all there and never been really wrecked(stock paint all around)
i know this area is not real active, but as this slow project goes along i'll keep it updated i hope to have another show truck in time.
Alaskan I don't know why they would have totaled your old one? looks like a little bondo and you would be on your way. hahah good luck with the new one
my '96 had 133k on it when she was killed. tranny only had about 25k on it. the top color was the factory "evergreen frost" the bottom was GM a silver of some form that came out more whiteish then anything lol
i cant decide on what to do paint wise on the new one. a big part of me wants to do a whole repaint the evergreen frost on my '96 but with all that brings along maybe i should keep this '98 green on top. if i do that i'm thinking a grey metalic. then house of color medium flake in the clear over the whole thing. i had this in the lower color of the '96.
my '96 is still covered in snow, but as soon as it warms up and i can get it out i'll be swapping my 4:10 axles out of the '96 then the interior. i'll worry about the exterior last since its the biggest thing and i change my mind so much haha
it wont be fast, but i hope to have a very nice truck i can show proudly at shows like i did with my '96 for 7 years.
ok so i'm thinking about going alittle more crazy with the paint the more i think about it. a full color change to somthing that will get attention. we shall see what it has in store.
luckily i can do all my own body work and use the paint booth at work
alittle better pic from today. with my friends sisters '97 V8 xlt...twins almost
okay! made alittle progress today. got my '96 running and moving under its own power. used the expedition and a chain to pull the front end off the fan which amazingly is still there!
so hopfully soon, i can swap the interiors and axles into the new '98.
well i made alittle progress on the '98. not nearly as much as i would like to but daily life an work keeps me very busy.
so far, oil change, new air filter, new bearings in the idler pullys and belt tensioner. washed her, cleaned under the hood. tonight i cleaned my eagle alloy wheels and cooper STT's up and put them on. man she looks kinda mean lol i forgot how loud those STTs are compared to a normal A/T tire.
next up are a very good cleaning, putting my new pass rear door on after its painted, new front bumper. swap out interiors and axles...the fun [art will be the custom paint job! all in due time though.
scored a brush gaurd w/mounting kit for free! i need to paint it up and put some nice lights on it. but i had to mount it up tonight. looks pretty mean!

i like those bush bars on the explorers! Makes them look less rounded and smooth and a lot more mean and menacing! i have one on my exploder too but its eaten 2 transmissions now and ive upgraded to my excursion. in time i want to get a second gen 5.0L exploder again they are good little vehicles!
thanks! i really like how it looks. plan to clean it up here soon and throw some paint on it.
picked this up tonight for $300!!!! pefect body and near perfect interior. 172k mile '99 sport 4.0 sohc 4x4 auto. blown tranny and the motor is almost dead. bought it for parts...but i may put my good 4.0 ohv and tranny out of my wrecked '96 in it.
plan is to use the newer front bumper and paintable rear bumper on my V8.
