So this afternoon I came around a turn, got what sounded like a backfire, and then lost all power and the truck would not start again. Tried again an hour later, and 3 hours later with no success. Was about to bring the truck in before this because had been backfiring and idling rough.
Some details: 1979 f150 with an edelbrock carb and a 460 out of a 76 lincoln.
Any ideas? I'm very new to this truck (thanksgiving) and know next to nothing about fixing it on my own but trying to slowly learn what I can. Truck was rebuilt frame up in 2005 by my grandfather's friend and has 3000 miles on new engine/tranny Thanks

Basic check - spark, gas and air.
Air is probably good.
Check for spark.
Check for gas. Mine choked like that on Sunday. Turns out some crap in the tank was preventing fuel from being sucked up by the fuel pump.
Installed a fuel filter tonight, and will pull the tank. Some day...
I would check the spark first, I use to work at a car dealer, we had a coil that lost some oil thru a small crack, every time you turn it would shut off. But Papabear has you on the right track.
IMO Mark a. is right on. Pull the dist. cap up and turn the engine over to see if the rotor button turns. I have had several 351M/400M and 429/460s do this. Once an oil pump locked up. The other times ????
