Rusty Driveshaft etc.

I was wondering if anything can be done about my driveshaft thats totally surface rusted. Its all surface rust, no structural damage but would like to prime and paint it...Also the muffler and pipes on the exhaust are rust pitted but not through. this is a Tx/AZ truck and can't figure where all the rust came from, the dealership said it is the steel they used in 2004 before aluminizing??????? What do u think and what can I do? you can see the truck is really shiny and cared for up top...

There are a couple of options: you can paint it all with POR 15 or Rust Bullit (epoxies) or you can go have the truck undercoated. Cost is about the same, really comes down to how pretty you want it and whether you want to trash your place or pay to let someone else trash theirs. I have done it both ways. If you choose the first option, follow the instructions to the letter, put plastic down, and wear a Tyvek paint suit!

Mine is a CA truck and I don't have nearly as much rust as you're saying. Bought mine in '09 and it is an '02.

Man you southern guys would die up here. My previous 06 had tons of surface rust on the underside of the body and bed, I mean everywhere. Frames, driveshafts were brown from rust. Even the aluminum stuff like transmissions and t-cases have white residue on them. The rear bumper was almost all rusted and the doors were showing signs of rust at the bottoms. My current ride has much less rust but it's there. Theres even rust on the underside of the hood. Gotta love salt in the winter!!! But thats why I purchased the winter beater car.

$250 +/-

Since this is for appearance rather than warranty, pick what is convenient. Most shops will acid wash, rinse, then air dry before application. Took Ziebart about a half day to do the '98.

No undercoat on the exhaust system. You can paint with high heat paint, or just ignore it until it fails. Others can talk about fancy exhaust replacement.

How much extra would it be to get the frame and underside of the cab and bed painted with POr-15 do you guys think? my beds getting pulled by a shop this summer to get the fender arches cut out and replaced rotted out last year and again this year, they are also painting the entire truck because its been chipping everywhere from the last guy that did it, they also said they would paint the underside of the bed too after they were done but ive been thinking abotut having them do POR-15 befor ethey paint it even on my frame and the underside of the cab.

I would not undercoat the driveshafts. Too heavy and will cause an out of balance on the shaft. It doesn't take much to cause a vibration. Paint is your only option on that, and take care with the balancing weights if you do that.

I have had good luck with using a rust converter (POR15 or equivalent) followed by black rust-resistant black paint.

You get to spend a quality day under your truck cleaning, scraping, priming and then painting.... Good fun.

Alternately, just spray the rusty stuff with Fluid Film or an equivalent rust inhibitor. I prefer the paint. Both methods work just fine.
