5.4 reman-looking for options

Looks like my 99' 5.4 took the cam adjuster out, Ford dealer quoted $3000 to fix it so I'm looking at a reman. I was going to go in and fix my current motor but after buying all the special tools the time, and money and still having a 124,000 mile motor in the end, I figure pulling the motor and putting in a reman with warranty is a better option. I was quoted $3700 for a long block with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty wich they say transfers with the motor. Does this sound about right or are there FTE sponsors I should be looking at?

I was going to trade in about 4-6 months before this, but if I put in a long block should I be able to recoup some of that money in say 6 months to a year on trade in value? (part of the reason I was thinking of hanging with a ford reman)

I bought the truck new- has right at 124,000 miles now, body and interior are like new. I've always been good at maintanence on it, just one of those things I guess. Been a good truck otherwise I've spent little to nothing on it since I bought it, tires and oil changes basically.

That is a bit steep. Is that the price installed?

You should be able to snag the Ford re-man'd motor for about $2700 exchange---see if you have a friend who gets a trade discount at your local stealerships. Unless you're close enough to one of the FTE sponsors shipping would kill you---not to mention sending the toast engine back for core refund.

Tough call whether a new engine improves the personal sale or trade-in value. The benefit is the warranty transfers which may or may not be of interest if you sell it personally--trade in I'm guessing they'd try dismissing that as no big deal until they offered it to a perspective buyer on their lot.

One way or another seems you'll have somewhere near $3K in making it driveable again. If you plan on keeping it for another 150K or more miles a new engine makes perfect sense. I'm facing this same sort of decision soon with my '00 5.4 @ 265K miles---new-to-me van or about $4K for motor and incidentals---tough choice.

He is in Minnesota and so is Tousley Ford. Take it to the crew there and they will take care of you.

Always ask for Steve or Mike R. They are absolutely the best when it comes to Ford parts.

I'll bet we all have that one store or outlet where we've spent small fortunes!

We have a mega-dealer here locally (their claim anyway) who are somewhat the joke of quick buck deals where the sucker err customer is bent over when financing something---parts wise I avoided them for years. As luck has it a real mega-dealer whose parts department was almost was a mini-Detroit inventory wise. Proximity alone had me start using the other outfit----they've been somewhat amazing at taking and fulfilling orders of any size or nature. I was able to gain wholesale status without the usual hoop jumping and begging which was another pleasant discovery.

Good on ya Ironhand---I might hit you up for a favor for a factory cruise control kit I'll be needing for an '20-03 E350 I'm looking for!

Got a friend- works at a auto body/ fix it shop- they get all their stuff from tousley- they were $1000 less then the local dealer quoted me and the warranty changed from 100,000 to unlimited!!!! AND there was a $200 rebate till the end of april that goes to the installer-

BUT I ended up finding a low mile motor out of a reputable junk yard for $1800, fully tested with a 199 day warranty. Considering I want to trade with in the year this just seems like the best route. I can pull my motor slap this one in and be done. drive it for roughly a year and not really be out any money.

I did ask my local dealer about value of a new motor on trade in. "well it will be like, if you put new tires on then came in to trade" "I just dont have to duduct for bad tires"

SOOO in the end- Guess who's NOT going to get the new pickup sale- to bad for them, it will be a 50 grand window stickered pickup to. I dont trade much (obviously) but when I do I make it count.

IS Tousleys sales department as good as their parts and service??
My buddy also has nothing but good things to say about them- and hes a die hard mopar guy!!

Thanks for all the replies though- I went round and around about what to do, finally just aimed and pulled the trigger.

Sometimes these deals come down to strictly financial, mostly how much to not spend chasing something with little or no chance of moving you forward.

Hope what was contributed helped even a little!

Yeah it did- I was racking my brain for 2 weeks on what to do, in the end- I guess if I was going to keep it for another 5 years- well then I could drive the money for the new motor out of it. But I really dont plan on keeping it for more then a year and theres NO way I'm going to get my money back out of it- even probably selling it privately. It did help alot that the junk yard I got it from is very reputable, it will have the op and compression test with it and the warranty. The pickup its coming out of got hit in the front- which I was skeptical about until they sent me pics of it- got hit lightly in the left front, no way it got in to the motor- maybe the radiator, air bags werent deployed or anything.

I appreciate the help alot though- it contributed to my decision.
