I was wondering if it is possible to swap in a 300 I6 into a '97; assuming that it will bolt-up to the transmission. I'm hoping that someone else has tried it and hasn't run into major clearance issues aside from having to switch to an electric fan and put in a different fan shroud.
Big issue is the ECM and all the harness has to come with the motor.
Reasons are the EEC control is Speed Density , not mass air assuming a fuel injection motor.
Nothing is interchangable with the PCM system you now have as well as transmision control with the EEC system won't cut it either unless you go to a stand alone controller.
I would not think all this hassle would be worth it.
Something most forget or don't think about is this sort of conversion makes you the sole expert on what you have since no shop would want to touch it from a responsalibity for work standpoint for fixing or sorting out any issues.
Good luck.
I was planning on going with a carbureted motor instead of computerized; I have the manual transmission and transfercase, so I think I can cut computers out of the equation entirely aside from having to figure out what to do with the speed sensor. I know my speed from my tach and GPS anyhow. Thanks for letting me know that no shop would touch it though.
This is the value of stating the full info and intent the first time to save from chasing things needlessly.
Few here ever want to revert back to the 70s, 80s and early 90s for motors.
The I6 was last offered with fuel injection in the early 90s as a 4.9L MAP controlled motor..
That's why you got that answer.
Good luck.
