Im looking to swap in a ford 300i6 into my 1987 5 speed ranger 4x4 i have all the dimensions for the 300i6 however i do not have the exact measurements for the motor bay on the ranger dose anyone know them?
The 4.9L I6 is too long to fit into a Ranger unless you plan on an electric fan and substantial cuts into the firewall and floor to accommodate the I6 engine length.
If you HAVE to swap in a different motor, think about the 302 V8. It's shorter and just as reliable. It's not near as easy of a swap as putting a 350 Chevy into an S10 pickup, but there are companies out there that have make kits to make your job easier.

yes im aware that there are other swaps out there im also aware that there are far more easier swaps but the 300 i6 is not as long as you might think it is 36.65" from the fan to the flange 28.65" from the front of the block to the back. Compared to say a 460 which is 32" from the front of the block to the back of the block and i have a buddy that put in the 460 and he only had to cut the heater box. If i had to go with a different motor i would just throw in a turbo 2.3 out of a Thunderbird
If you swap in the I6, you will have to include an I6 transmission and transfer case in order to keep your Ranger a 4x4. The length of that combo takes up most of the area where the Ranger fuel tank is now located. With a 302 V8, there are Explorer auto transmission and AWD transfer case parts available that bolt up. With a 2.3L turbo, there are older model 2.3L Ranger 4x4 manual transmission and transfer cases that bolt up.

The trans im going to use is the np435 and its smalller than the FM-145 i have in the ranger now its a 4 speed as i hate automatic and i dont want more holes than i have in my floor honestly im not as worried about when i first was about doing it tbh the motor is the longest thing by far and im not delusional ik its long as hell but even so tilting and lift kits always help thinking logically i probably will have to cut the firewall but i dont know quite yet its also important to know that i listed the dimensions for a long block as XP1 now makes a short block i6 based off the 300
