I have a 1991 ford explorer 4.0 automatic. It has automatic front hubs and pushbutton 4x4. About every 10th stoplight, I get a grinding noise that sounds like you tried to engage the four wheel drive while still moving for the initial lock in. Can this be the solenoid going bad? Everything up front is nice and tight brake and suspension wise. There are no other noises so I dont think the hubs are bad. Any ideas?
Update: I pulled the front driveshaft out and took it for a test drive and dont have any noise now. How can I troubleshoot the transfer case and find out if it is an electrical part not working or if it is something more serious inside the case.
With the front driveshaft removed, look under the explorer at the at the yoke and have someone else slowly move the explorer forward and see if it turns. Also, dont get yourself killed while doing this.
The front axle turns when moving and jacked up it moves the wheels with no noise or resistance. I think it is in the pushbutton 4x4 somehow but dont know how to troubleshoot the system.
