You'll probably want to filter no finer than ~10 microns pre-filter. Either a spin-on filter or one of the inline filters like the DI kit has. I used the ITP kit. Seen a few posts where people who made there own say they should have just done a kit from a cost/time perspective. Depends on your skills and access to tools and parts I guess.

What companies are DI and ITP? I think the only kit I am aware of is maybe Stricly Diesel.
Strictly Diesel used to be ITP. Same kit, and it is a good kit. I used their kit on my F250, and until now I would have always said the same thing regarding just getting the kit.
However, they have upgraded the brackets to heavy duty SS plate which has certainly added cost to the setup. Therefore, I would now personally recommend building your own kit. All the parts are readily available. As for the bracket, you don't need a full-width solid plate on the back side of the frame rail... just use a couple pieces of 1" angle in instead, and just use 4" wide flat bar stock for the front plate. Use carbon steel components and simply sand it and paint it with black appliance epoxy paint and be good to go for a bit less than $150 + S&H. I am now building my own kits for my son's F250 and my Excursion.
i went this route...pick any filter base, then match the thread of base to respectable filter...(think i'm usinf a 20micron). Other than that, a few barbed 3/8 fittings and your good...like mentioned above, find a metal yard, get some angle metal, drill few holes and mount. There a few spots along the frame where holes are side by side, and work great for bracket location.
ORB = O-ring Boss, o-ring helps create a strong fluid tight seal.
JIC = 37* flare style fitting
AN = another 37* flare style fitting used by the military (AN = Army-Navy)
Both AN and JIC are measure in 1/16th increments from -2(1/8th") to -32(2") and are in theory interchangeable but many people don't interchange them.
