Fuel Filter Change

Yesterday, my change oil message came on right on schedule. However, this time it was immediately followed by change fuel filter message.

I changed the fuel filters for the first time at 22,000 miles. I only have approximately 6500 miles on these filters and computer says its time to change. This seems pretty strange to me.

Manual says every 22,500 miles or when computer message says so but it also says that if you get more than average impurities in fuel that filters may need changing at sooner intervals.

Should I change them again? Would really appreciate yalls input/comments. Maybe I should change them and then do an autopsy on them. What do yall think? Thanks, Mark

When you changed the fuel filters the first time, did you reset the "fuel filter life" setting? If not, then that may be the reason why the message came on. If you did, then I would do as suggested, and change the fuel filters too, and autopsy them as you suggest.

EDIT: Nevermind. the message never would have gone away the first time, had you not reset. I would pull them, and put in fresh given the fact we are talking about the fuel system here.....

Getting a tank of bad fuel is a crap shoot. Some claim that when the stations storage tank gets close to empty the pump may suck up water and debris near the bottom. I'm more inclined to believe the opposite. When a tanker fills a storage tank, the high volume fuel flow into the near empty tank will wash up water and debris that had settled out. Anyway you get it, it can ruin a good day and maybe your engine too.

I like to choose a station that sells a lot of diesel with a high turnover. That should mean clean, fresh fuel that is constantly replaced.

The way I understand it the system uses miles and hours to determine the change interval. Do you idle a lot? As far as I know the system has no real way of determining whether or not your filters are getting clogged. There is a low fuel pressure warning if pressure to the pump gets below 75 PSI, but you'd see "Low Fuel Pressure" instead of "Change Fuel Filters".

No, don't really idle alot. I decided to buy the filters but have not installed them yet. I decided to reset the computer back to 100% to just see if and when the message comes back. If it comes back soon, I'm just gonna change the filters. Thanks, Mark
