need help by anyone who knows about 5.4's
ive got a 97 ford f150 5.4 how do you clean the valves ive got a ticking noise and i have no idea what it is but i have found some youtube videos of some trucks/cars with the same noise "mostly 4.6's" and have narrowed it down to i believe my vavles. now im not a 100% sure on that tho so i wold like to see if theres a way to clean them with out tearing down the engine.

****my noise****
the noise my truck is making sounds like its coming from
*where the engine and trans bolt up
*by the vavle covers torwards the back of the engine (mostly driver side)

->***note***<-
i have put brand new oil in it along with timing chains and fuel filter also added marvel mystery oil and i added some lucas fuel injection cleaner

What type of oil do you run and what change intervals do you use? I use synthetic at 5K mile changes. I just had my head off and the thing looked brand spanking new in there.
I don't know how to clean the valves without a opening it up and would guess but possibly shorter change intervals with synthetic for a while may help.
I don't understand a "ticking" noise being associated with the valves. Are you sure it's not an exhaust leak? Just askin.

typically if it is really valves making that noise....then your cam bearings or valve train components are getting beyond spec...best to remove and repair/overhaul your heads at a automotive machine shop.
many other things can make a lot of noise that sound similar to valves.
1st, would be make sure that you don't have a loose spark plug....re-torque to 28ft/lbs, if spark plug threads are stripped then you'll need to get a time -sert.
2nd, exhaust manifold leak, replace exhaust manifold
3rd, loose COP ( Coil On Plug)...these can get loose and make a arcing noise close to valve noise.
4th, injectors can make a lot of noise too....if a injector is making that much racket, personally, I wouldn't trust it too long.
a automotive stethoscope can be a vital tool when trying to isolate noise

Is it intermittant or continous?...sounds like an injecter loose/missing or worn bushings......most ticking (depending on severity) can be heard with yer ear, but stethascope really pinpoints as stated above...& injectors do make a distinct "clicking" in operation.....this complaint has been fixed by finding a worn/warped belt pully or belt slap itself...in those cases the ticking was continuous &linear...not intermittant as one would think....replaced a/c clutch bearings on one, a fanbelt on other...rare fix's for what usally causes it....ie, injector/fuelrail, or lifters...worth a shot anyway......good luck!

After you fasten in the COP, put a tee in the oil sender port and add a gauge, see what your oil PSI is. If you have low oil PSI when you have warmed up the motor, it would explain in short order what is happening to the top and front of the motor. If you think it is a fuel injector, try to locate the one, althoug most all are slightly noisy. If you remove it and test it, a miserable spray is what you will find.
